Tempo, memoria e natura sono i temi centrali sottesi nelle immagini fotografiche dell’artista americana Beth Moon. Sia che immortali maestosi alberi di Baobab per la serie Portraits of Time, sia che catturi lo strano equilibrio tra l’innocenza dell’infanzia e le ombra più oscure della Natura in The Kingdon Come, Moon rivela un’attenzione magica e istintuale per il modo in cui il tempo, la memoria e la natura concorrono nel far comprendere all’uomo il proprio posto nell’universo.

Beth Moon nasce nel Wisconsin e studia Belle Arti presso l’Università del Wisconsin. Le lezioni di pittura, disegno dal vero, scultura e design creeranno le basi per il lavoro fotografico, che arriverà più tardi.

Trasferitasi in Inghilterra, paese che vanta la maggiore concentrazione di alberi secolari, decide di dedicare a questi una serie di ritratti. Insoddisfatta delle tonalità risultanti dalla stampa a getto d’inchiostro, Moon inizia a stampare lei stessa le proprie fotografie, sperimentando processi alternativi e approdando infine all’antica tecnica al platino/palladio.

“Utilizzando il più stabile e duraturo processo di stampa, spero di parlare della sopravvivenza, non solo dell’uomo e della natura, ma della fotografia stessa. Per ogni stampa mescolo platino e palladio, creando una tintura che stendo a mano su carta cotone a trama grossa, che espongo poi alla luce. Ci sono molte fasi prima di arrivare all’immagine finita e queste sono per me importanti quanto lo scatto fotografico”.

Una stampa al platino palladio può durare per secoli. Questa scelta dunque vuole segnare una sorta di continuità tra quello che è il soggetto della fotografia ed il processo per realizzarla.

Il lavoro di Beth Moon è stato oggetto di numerose mostre personali e collettive in musei e gallerie d’arte di tutto il mondo, ricevendo sempre il plauso della critica.
